County already has a strong manager
In response to Mr. Micken’s letter and now Mr. Taylor’s regarding a county manager, isn’t it time to give credit to Ms. Nadine Nakamura? She serves as county manager and is doing a very competent and professional job. Her background includes studies at the University of Southern California in Public Administration as well as graduate studies at the University of Hawaii. She is totally qualified to serve as a county manager anywhere in the United States that employs such a system.
Mayor Carvalho has brought together an administrative team that is more than adequately serving Kauai. Both critics, my friends Glenn and Ken, have failed to note what shortcomings would be corrected by a county manager. The issue is skirted by condemning innuendos, unfair at best and inaccurate at most.
Glenn, Ken, check Ms. Nakamura’s credentials, see where she attended college and what courses were taken. Her training, background, and education and competence are a match for a county manager anywhere!
If your doubts still prevail, place a measure on the ballot and let the voters decide.
But above all, stop your foundless and unsubstantiated complaining!

Mahalo nui, Cost-U-Less
A big mahalo nui loa to managers Sherry Moniz, Diane Hughes and the awesome aloha spirited staff at Cost-U-Less Kapaa for donating a shopping cart to Hale Nana Kai O Kea senior housing behind Mahelona hospital.
The old shopping cart used for laundry made too much noise and there was no rubber left on the tires. So Cost-U-less jumped in, did what was pono and made a donation!
This helps residents who have a hard time lifting laundry and other things around the housing development.
All we can say is mahalo, mahalo, mahalo Cost-U-less.

Women need more choices
I am writing to express my concern for women on Kauai. It has recently been brought to my attention that the number of teenage pregnancies on Kauai has drastically increased. Teen pregnancy is a universal issue, and I understand that abortion is a large controversy, but the lack of any type of abortion clinic on Kauai eliminates these women’s choices altogether.
I’ve personally known women who have experienced this unfortunate dilemma and it is heartbreaking. Flights to Oahu, or to other surrounding islands that do provide abortion as an option, can be extremely expensive and many people do not have the means for such travel.
With the possibility of a money deficiency and other circumstances that are potentially problematic, women are not always able to travel to more advanced hospitals. I feel that, being as abortion is an option to all of America, Kauai should provide the opportunity for women to have a choice in how to go about their pregnancy.
