KALAHEO — Kaulupono coach Pedro Saligumba got a great birthday gift as his Division II girls took a 37-26 win over the Kauai Ballers Saturday during the county’s Division II youth basketball games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Facing a 4-2 deficit following the opening period, Kaulupono came back in the second period and never looked back.
Guard Kierstin Gummerus sparked the Kaulupono win with nine points followed by Braelyn Cayaban netting eight points. Tiana “TJ” Ramos and Kaye Serapio each added six points to the win.
Mele Tafea led the Kauai Ballers’ effort on 12 points followed by Jaliyah Casem getting five points.
Team Central 41, Hanakila 22
Hanakila’s Keawe Cabebe went to the long ball following a 6-0 deficit after the first period in the first of three Division II boys matches.
Cabebe was the only player to mark treys in the match, dropping one in the second period, one in the fourth period and two in the final period.
The effort came up short for Hanakila, the team comprised primarily of players from the Hanalei and Kilauea areas. It did, however, net Cabebe high-point honors in the 41-22 win by Team Central B.
Following Cabebe, John Calvan scored five points for Hanakila.
Cameron Leanio led the Team Central B win on 12 points followed by Kauulu Rittmeister scoring seven points. Jayden Calapatia and Travis Duran each dropped six points.
Team Central A 37, Kamikaze 25
Fouls plagued the Kamikaze throughout the match, pulling the Team Central A to a 37-25 win.
The Kamikaze marked eight fouls in the first half and another 14 in the second half giving Team Central A opportunity at the free throw line where the team sank 16 of 32 tries.
Team Central A low post Braden Simao led the scoring with 10 points followed by Justin Faidley adding nine points.
Micah Matsunaga marked a game-high 12 points for the Kamikaze effort, getting help from Takeshi Komar and Ben Brady each scoring four points.
Team Lihue 33, Westside 13
Marissa Layosa burned the twine for 18 points to lead the Team Lihue girls to a 33-13 win over Westside who got four points each from Chyna Fernandez and Deyshia Kenney.
Tiana Manera helped Layosa’s lead with 12 points.
Aloha State Warriors 39, Team Lihue 33
The Team Lihue boys were not as fortunate as they came up six points short, 39-33 against the Aloha State Warriors in the day’s finale.
Ofa Paua topped the Warriors’ scoring on 11 points followed by Keon Orlando finishing with 10 points and Kesomi Fonua adding nine points.
David Pascua topped the Team Lihue scoring on 14 points followed by Jonas Jarquio ending with six points.
The county’s Division II youth basketball series enters its final week with three games scheduled today at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
