LIHUE — Sunday was designated as Goof Off Day, an annual observance which allows people the opportunity to step back from the rigors and pressures of everyday life.
But for Donna McCalla, a volunteer with the Kauai Quilt Show, and Chris Dela Cruz, manager of Pictures Plus at Kukui Grove Center, there was no time to do something silly, or waste an hour or two.
“It’s been quite busy,” said McCalla, also the recipient of a blue ribbon in the show, who was volunteering for the first time since joining the Kauai Quilt Guild five years ago. “But since the show runs through March 29, there’s only one more Sunday to do this. I’ll wait until my shift is over, and then goof off.”
Dela Cruz was busy tidying up the showroom floor at Pictures Plus. She also was placing a poster on the windows announcing the Contractors Association of Kauai Home Show, which will be April 17 from 2:30 to 9 p.m., and April 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
“We’re definitely going to be part of this home show,” Dela Cruz said. “Last year, we were selected Best in Show and we have every intention of defending that honor.”
With a theme of “Kupuna to Keiki: Building for Today and Tomorrow,” Dela Cruz was busy pondering the items Pictures Plus has that will fit into the theme of new products, displays and seminars.
What follows Goof Off Day?
According to the Days of the Year website, today is Melba Toast Day. It is also Near Miss Day, commemorating when a large asteroid missed Earth by just a half-million miles in 1989. Today is also Puppy Day, which celebrates the joy a puppy can bring.
