POIPU — Kauai High School golf teams swept the opening round of Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf Saturday at the Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Led by Trevor Kua firing a 78 after crossing on a 1-over par 37, the Red Raiders’ boys team finished the day at 323 (78-79-83-83-87) under sunny skies and trade winds blowing in the 10 to 20 mph range.
On the girls’ course, Kauai returning golfer Hiilani Alana topped the Raider field on a 90 (45-45) to lead the Lady Raiders to a team 282 (90-94-98-101).
Joining Alana on the field, Janae Park (49-45-94) was four strokes off the pace followed by Dillyn Sakai (50-48-98) and Kiri Oshiro (48-53-101).
Naea Oda, a returning Kapaa High School golfer, carded the girls’ best round of the day with an 84 (42-42), but the Warriors fell to second place with a 341 (84-114-143). Chloe Stutt (50-64-114) and Paige Wesoloski (69-74-143) filled out the Warriors’ team scorecard.
Waimea rounded out the girls’ field at 365 (113-116-136) despite the withdrawal of its returning golfer Samantha Nichols. This gave the Menehune lead to Bailee Taeza (59-54-113), Melia Takakusagi (55-61-16), a strong Menehune competitor from the school’s air riflery and girls soccer program. Daneica Muraoka (61-75-136) rounded out the Waimea girls’ scoring players.
Kapaa boys finished 21 strokes off the pace led by returning golfer Bryden Salvador who posted a 2-over par 74 (38-36), the best round of the day.
Other Warriors scoring for the team included Kainalu Gandia (45-41-86), Sequoia Logan (48-42-90), Tyshawn Cain (50-44-94) and Dylan Desilva (53-50-103).
Island School filled in the No. 3 spot led by returning golfer Reece Valencia who posted an 89 (42-47), four strokes better than Michael Miller (46-47-93) who came off a strong boys soccer showing. Adam Sclafani (53-49-102) and Jacob Dysinger (52-48-100) filled in the Voyagers’ team scorecard.
Waimea High School, returning to the course with a team this year, saw Ky Tomimoto take the lead on a 123 (64-59) followed by Austin Banasihan (62-73-135), Hunter Ragasa (74-68-142) and Braden Kobayashi (88-67-155).
The KIF golfers next tee off at Kauai Lagoons Saturday at noon.
