LIHUE — Michael Miller of Island School and Henry Delos Reyes of Waimea High School led the way during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation first qualifying meet Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
Miller and Delos Reyes each pocketed two state consideration (based on 2014 standards) events. For the boys, Miller and Delos Reyes accounted for four of the six consideration events. Consideration times mean the athletes could be considered to take part in states at the end of the season.
“This is the first meet,” said Kawehi Louis-Diamond, a Kauai High School coach. “The kids are still nervous and working out the kinks.”
Miller demonstrated his experience in the 1,500 meter run where he stopped the clock at 4 minutes 27.73 seconds, edging out his brother Josh for first place by nearly 10 seconds. The run exceeded the 2014 consideration standard of 4:28.64.
Miller followed the 1,500 by capturing top honors in the Boys 3,000 meter run, stopping the clock at 9:44.07.
Delos Reyes opened his consideration events with a first finish in the Boys 300 meter hurdles at 42.98, getting past the 2014 consideration bar of 43.74.
He followed that feat with a top finish in the boys triple jump, leaping to 40 feet, 10 inches, surpassing the 2014 consideration mark of 40-01.25.
Kauai High School runner Charles Samuel topped the Boys 800 meter run on a 2:07.80 run, nearly 2 seconds ahead of Island School’s Josh Miller. But the effort fell short of the consideration standard by a mere .2 second.
The remaining two consideration events went to Kapaa High School when Junard Mata soared to a leap of 5-10 in the high jump.
Warrior Noah LaMadrid pocketed the second consideration event with a leap of 19-00 in the long jump.
The Warriors’ boys 4×100 relay team topped the event on a 46.90 run, missing the 2014 consideration by a mere .04 second.
The second qualifying track and field meet takes place at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
– On the girls side, two consideration events went to Waimea High School when Leann Lopez stopped the clock at 17.44 seconds in the girls 100 meter hurdles, surpassing the 2014 consideration standard of 17.74.
She was joined by fellow Menehune Tianalee Apilado who threw the discus 97 feet, half an inch, topping the field of throwers and surpassing the 2014 consideration standard 95-06.
Kauai High School senior Jordan Ganam topped the girls 100 meter dash, stopping the clock at 13.76, just a half second shy of the 2014 consideration standard.
“It was still fun,” Ganam said. “This is my fourth year running, and I’ve already been to states. My goal this year to to make the Top 3 in the 100 meter hurdles.”
The second qualifying track and field meet takes place at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
