KAPAA — Since the start of this year, the comfort station next to the skate park at the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapaa has been vandalized several times a week, resulting in significant county resources being directed toward repairs.
Last Friday, an individual or a group of people destroyed one of the women’s toilets, a urinal, and two sinks on the exterior of the building. Additionally, graffiti was sprayed on the interior walls.
County officials are asking for the public’s assistance with stopping the rampant vandalism.
“The destruction has to stop and we need the public’s help,” said Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo. “If you see anyone acting suspiciously or hear of anyone’s involvement in acts of vandalism, please contact the Kauai Police Department.”
Rapozo estimates that the cost of repairs resulting from the vandalism at the Kapaa restroom alone to be $1,500 per month, money that could be used toward other county parks.
“We are all impacted by the vandalism,” said Rapozo. “The replacement costs and manpower requirements are borne by the taxpayers. In addition, the time spent on repairs means time taken away from other parks.”
