NAWILIWILI — The Kapaa High School tennis teams overcame pesky problems to sweep its series over Kauai High School, 4-1, 4-1, Saturday at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts.
Normally, the Warriors would host the match at courts at their school, but through an agreement with the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, their matches were re-located to the Kauai Lagoons courts.
“Players out with colds, a fly in the eye, those are kinds of problems coaches face,” said Kapaa coach Richard Wanek while watching Kapaa trainer Chris Ang tend to an injured player. “I pulled my No. 1 singles player Kiarra Tamayose who is battling a 103-degree temperature, and was proud of the way the girls stepped up and rallied to a 4-1 victory.”
On the boys’ court, Wanek said his No. 1 singles boys player, Matt Steinohrt, was coming off a lengthy illness and grew tired in the second set, giving Kauai’s Braeden Myrick the Red Raiders’ only win, 6-4, 6-1.
Tamayose, bundled in a sweatshirt while watching Isabell Kotsol battle Kauai’s Tarryn Orial, said she caught something Thursday and missed practice Friday despite trying to break the fever.
Kotsol stepped up to defeat Orial 6-0, 6-4 on the girls No. 1 singles court. She was joined in the victory circle by Shanon Sitzler on the girls No. 2 singles court who held off a tough Teyanni Esaki, 6-1, 7-5 for the win.
Kauai’s sole victory on the girls’ courts came in the girls No. 3 doubles where Mie Miller paired with Dareen Dameg to take Kapaa’s Kelsey Armstrong and Lila Hearn, 6-0, 6-1.
Kapaa marked its win on the girls No. 1 doubles court where Chelsea Ferrer and Jasmine Carate outlasted the Red Raiders’ Rachel Marshal and Tailee “Mahina” Tangonan, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Kayla Takamura teamed with Dedre Andaya for a come-from-behind win over Kaylin Kukino and Madison Rayno, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 on the girls No. 2 doubles arena.
Kauai marked a victory in the exhibition match when Manna Granziano teamed with Helena Huffman for an 8-6 win over Kapaa’s Tigerlilly Zietz and Bailey Cooper.
On the boys’ courts, Kapaa’s Kai Harrison redeemed Steinohrt’s loss with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mitchel Evens in a tight match on the boys No. 2 singles court.
Kapaa took all of the doubles matches, starting with the boys No. 1 doubles when Wyatt Harrison teamed with Shawn Yamane for a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Kauai pair of Akira Takabayashi and Holden Halliday.
Bear Zietz paired with Jake De Peralta on the boys No. 2 doubles court to defeat Kauai’s Ethan Combs and Ryan Owan, 6-0, 6-2.
On the boys No. 3 doubles court, Kapaa’s Makani Crowder paired with Braedon Andrews to beat Red Raiders Sheaden Tallano and Grant Urmatam, 6-1, 6-2.
Kapaa boys continued its winning ways in the exhibition court where Kyler Tom paired with Brandon Quilos to defeat Kauai’s Charles Butay and Urmatam, 8-0.
Island School at Waimea
Over at the Hanapepe tennis courts, Waimea High School hosted the Island School Voyagers with the Menehune men being victorious, 4-1 while the Voyager women went home with a 4-1 record over the Menehune wahine.
Davis Huffman of Island School downed Waimea’s Marcus Pereira, 6-2, 6-1 on the boys No. 1 singles court for the Menehune’s sole loss for the boys.
Patrick Cowell of Waimea got past Island School’s James Papa, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 on the boys No. 2 singles court.
Waimea controlled all three of the boys doubles, starting with Joshua Subiate teaming with Gilson Guillermo on the boys No. 1 doubles court for the 6-4, 6-1 win over Sam Goldberg and Ian Cowden.
Riley Saiki paired with Marc Serapio on the boys No. 2 doubles court for the 6-3, 6-4 win over Zeb Wichert and Eli Kitchman, and on the boys No. 3 doubles court, Robbie Jiao and Edmelle Medina were victorious over Island School’s Ethan Jeal and Quentin Allen, 6-0, 6-1.
On the girls’ courts, Waimea’s only win came in the girls No. 3 doubles when Kristine Ruiz teamed with Khryshia Pascual to defeat the Voyager pair of Gabirela Fratta and Alison Summerhays, 6-2, 6-2.
Island School girls took the remainder of the matches including the No. 1 girls singles where Michaela Fitzgerald was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Emily Evans. On the girls No. 2 singles court, Island School’s Mia Fitzgerald picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kylah Gruspe.
The Voyager women also took the first and second doubles matches starting with Katy Davidson teaming with Alex Obert to defeat Waimea’s Diane Gawaran and Micah Guillermo, 6-2, 6-1.
Whitney Summerhays teamed with Bri Griep for the Island School win over Ashley Pascual and Shania Miner, 6-1, 6-2 on the girls No. 2 doubles court.
With the win, Kapaa next hosts Waimea Saturday at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts starting at 10 a.m.
Kauai will travel to the Kauai Community College tennis courts to meet Island School, also starting at 10 a.m.
