NAWILIWILI — Fast Company picked up the win in the second race of the six-race Nawiliwili Yacht Club Ken Dorland Memorial Series on Thursday.
Sailing in northerly winds in the 10- to 12-knot range, the Olson 30, one of four in the racing fleet, slipped through the 3.51-mile course on an elapsed sail of 39 minutes, 18 seconds and corrected to 39:22 PHRF for top honors.
“Spinnaker sail strategy won over,” said NYC Rear Commodore Fred Styer. “Two Olson 30 sloop rigs, Fast Company and OZone, took advantage of long following winds along the latter stretches, and excellent winds set the stage for the well-versed sailor who measured their turns just at the right moment.”
OZone, another of the Olson 30 and a perennial competitor with Fast Company, sailed into the runner-up berth on a 40:21 elapsed sail, correcting to 40:25 PHRF.
Bonjolea II, capturing top honors in the first of the Ken Dorland series last week, settled for a third place finish, crossing the finish line first overall at 38:27 elapsed sail, but falling to third place following its PHRF correction (40:58 PHRF), 33 seconds back of OZone. The action was watched by an audience of more than 20 people, including a number who said they were from the “deep north of Canada.”
Coyote (49:30 elasped, 46:22 PHRF), coming in fifth place in the PHRF class, corrected to 38:54 Club for top honors in that division.
She was followed by Weatherly (44:24 elapsed, 44:28 PHRF) who corrected to 40:04 Club, and Speedy (48:52 elapsed, 48:57 PHRF) who corrected to 42:24 Club.
The public is invited to view the NYC Ken Dorland Series with the NYC Race Committee on Thursday when first flags fly at 5 p.m. at the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty wall area.
