PUHI — Michael Gmelin’s life in Panama inspired her to move to Kauai.
“I lived there for two years in the 1960s when my father was in the military,” said Gmelin, a librarian at the Kauai Community College Learning Resource Center. “There are three of us at the college, Linde Kiel, a tutor, and Keith Olsen, a student and tutor, who lived in Panama.”
Pooling their resources, Gmelin said they’ve put together a display of artifacts, crafts, photos, maps, and books about Panama, the Panama Canal, the country and its different peoples.
“The Embera people were used by the United States to help teach jungle survival to soldiers heading to Vietnam,” Gmelin said.
