LIHUE — Write-on Kauai is offering four scholarships to local students for the Kauai Writers Conference in May.
“I think that if a student wants to become a writer there’s nothing more important than meeting other writers who are involved professionally so you can understand what it’s like to be a writer. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to learn lessons from the pros to make sure your writing is top notch,” said Dave Rosenberg, president of Write-on Kauai.
The conference is scheduled May 1-3 at Courtyard by Marriott in Kapaa. It brings together writers from around the world, and will show students what the professional industry is like so they can understand what role they want to play, Rosenberg said.
Each scholarship is worth $400 and will be given to one student from each high school on Kauai and to one student at Kauai Community College. Three of the scholarships were donated by the Kapaa Rotary Club while the Joseph Figaroa Foundation donated the fourth.
Applicants will need to display an interest in writing and should have a recommendation from their teachers, faculty and school administrators.
“I think that books change lives,” Rosenberg said. “I really believe that. I know that my life has been changed by books.”
Originally created by Poet Joseph McNeilly Byrne, Write-On-Kauai started as a support group for poets but it quickly expanded into helping individuals interested in fiction, non-fiction and memoirs develop their writing skills. It created the Kauai Writer’s Conference in 2014.
