KOLOA — Al Sugano, an orchid grower in Koloa, did not have too many specimens at the Sunshine Market on Monday.
“We have the orchid show coming up, so a lot of them will be heading there,” Sugano, a weekly vendor, said. “I’m looking to have some in for judging.”
Sugano will join other orchid growers in submitting plants for judging when the Garden Island Orchid Society hosts its annual Spring Fantasy Orchid Show and Sale at the Hanapepe United Church of Christ.
Doors to the show open at noon Friday and the show and sale will continue until 7 p.m. On Saturday, the hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ada Koene of the GIOS said on Friday food sales will be available from 11 a.m. Admission is free.
Koene said in addition to the orchid show, which is the main fundraising opportunity for the orchid club, there will be orchid plants, orchid crafts and food available for sale. The GIOS cookbook will also be available for purchase.
At the same time as the GIOS Spring Fantasy show, which has a theme of a Zen garden, the Kauai Orchid and Art Festival in Hanapepe will take place Friday and Saturday, as well as the Hanapepe Public Library’s 65th anniversary celebration on Saturday.
Sugano said the weather has been good for phalaenopsis, or more commonly known as “moth” orchids, so there should be a lot of good specimens available, both for judging and sale.
“I’ve got some dendrobiums, which I’ll be looking at submitting for judging,” Sugano said. “And, since the weather was so good for phalaenopsis, maybe some of them as well.”
