Trinity, a trimaran, capitalized on 15-20 mph cold winds out of the north to win the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Ken Dorland Memorial Series Race No. 4 on Thursday evening in Nawiliwili.
“Cold and persistent 20 mph north winds set the stage for excitement,” said Fred Styer, NYC Rear Commodore.
Trinity relished the wind, slipping through the 6-mile, three-leg course on an elapsed sail of 47 minutes, 33 seconds and corrected to 54:08 PHRF for top honors in the six-boat flotilla.
“Trinity, the sole trimaran, flew through the course well ahead of the monohulls as if she was skating on ice,” Styer said. “Fast Company held true to a very fast pace, but was outgunned by the swift trimaran.”
Fast Company crossed nearly 10 minutes behind Trinity, stopping the clock on a 56:12 elapsed sail and corrected to 56:17 PHRF for the runner-up position.
She was followed by Rebel, a Wells 27, who crossed at 1:09:34 elapsed sail and correcting to 57:14 PHRF.
Coyote, a C&C 38, actually slipped across the line ahead of Rebel on a 1:01:07 elapsed sail, but the PHRF correction put her in fourth place at 57:15 PHRF, just a second back of the Wells boat.
Coyote corrected to 48:02 Club for top honors in that class.
Weatherly (58:04 elapsed, 58:09 PHRF) and OZone (59:48 elapsed, 59:54 PHRF) rounded out the field at Kalapaki Bay.
