LIHUE — Kauai High School graduate and current Eastern Washington University student Tamara Akau was accepted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
“Honestly, when I received the email invitation to join the society, I was excited to be offered the opportunity,” Akau said. “It’s nice to be recognized for my hard work done so far in my freshman year.”
The NSCS is part of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the country’s only interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second-year students, according to a press release issued by the society.
“The NSCS is more than just a symbol of academic achievement,” said NSCS founder and Chief Executive Officer, Stephen E. Loflin in the press release. “Membership gives students access to a number of amazing benefits including career and networking resources, scholarship, travel and service projects both on campus and in the community.”
The membership for the program is by invitation only and is based on a student’s GPA and class standing. The NSCS has over 1 million members and 300 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
“It made me feel confident that I am excelling with my academics,” said Akau, who holds a 3.7 GPA.
Akau is majoring in communication disorders while minoring in psychology and will travel back to Kauai on Friday to speak with students at Kauai high schools about the benefits of college in addition to her experiences at EWU.
Akau’s mother, Teresa Caires, is pleased with her daughter’s success.
”I’m just very proud of her,” Caires said.
Tamara is the daughter of Teresa Caires, who lives in Puhi, and Heath Akau, who lives in Kalaheo.
