PUHI — Kapaa High School’s varsity boys volleyball team defeated Island School, 3-0, Friday evening at the Voyagers’ home gym.
The Warrior boys (1-1 KIF) won by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-16.
“I think coming off of the Waimea game, we went back into the gym and we had to work on a few things,” said Kapaa head coach Kapule Kaona. Kapaa lost to Waimea, 3-2, on Tuesday in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season opening game.
“A lot of our position and our passing. Just a lot of basic, fundamental volleyball,” he said. “We had to strip it down. It was almost like we had to take a step back and go back to basic volleyball. As coaches, we assumed that they understood the basic stuff, but they really didn’t.”
“I think we cleaned it up a lot better,” the Warriors coach added. “I asked the boys, ‘How did we do on the things we tried to work on?’ They said they did a lot better. They felt more confident in it. So, that’s the good thing.”
Kapaa junior opposite hitter Max Nice said that although going over basics felt redundant in practice, it was all necessary.
“We definitely had a good few days of practice after our wake-up from the Waimea game,” Nice said. “We definitely saw improvements today.”
“Our passing is what we were having trouble with. If we can get our passing down, we can get a good set, get a good hit and keep the pressure on the other team,” he added. “Practice was just slow, but we got through it.”
Island School coach Kaipo Kealalio said his team is young and they will continue to work on improving.
Nice had two kills and and ace. Junior middle hitter Mosese Fifita had five kills and a block, and junior opposite hitter Junard Mata had three kills and an ace for Kapaa.
Voyagers junior middle blocker Kaikane Anderson had two blocks, a kill and an ace. Sophomore opposite hitters Makoa Pratt and Keoni Downer each scored two kills. Sophomore middle blocker KiliKai Ahuna had two aces for Island School.
Kapaa also won the junior varsity game in straight sets, 25-19, 25-10 and 26-24.
Kapaa will host Kauai High and Island School (0-2 KIF) will play at Waimea on Tuesday. JV games will begin at 5 p.m. and the varsity will follow.
