The Kauai Thunder, a boys basketball team for 9- and 10-year-olds, earned the consolation championship at the 20th annual Kona Stingrays Invitational basketball tournament, which wrapped up last Sunday in Kona.
Divina Plowman, the team’s manager, said this is the second year the team ventured to Kona to compete in the 12-team field in the age division.
The Kauai Thunder earned a seed in the consolation bracket.
“The team faced the same single-elimination, do-or-die situation as last year,” Plowman said.
Facing the Kona Stingrays No. 2 team, the Kauai Thunder advanced to the title game, following a 32-7 victory, and faced an aggressive team from Oahu, the North Shore Hoops.
The Thunder overcame the Oahu full-court defensive pressure to pull out a 37-19 win for the consolation championship.
