Chelsea’s Agora Gallery in New York will feature the original work of Kauai-based artist Sheila Susanna Shelton in “Portal of Enigma.” The exhibition opens on May 19 and will run until June 9. The opening reception will take place May 21.
Shelton paints outdoors in “pure light” under a mountain apple tree in Kauai.
“My paintings are an expression of the silence and joy that is happening in my innermost being,” she said.
Shelton studied at the Color Research Institute of San Francisco, where she learned the metaphysics of color, an ancient Hindu science. She views painting as a meditative practice that eliminates the ego. When she paints, Shelton said she feels that she is no longer a “doer,” but instead a medium through which life itself travels.
“What cannot be said in words is said in the play of colors,” she said.
