Davis Huffman of Island School, top seed in the boys singles, will face off against Braden Myrick of Kauai, second seed, when the finals of the state qualifying tennis tournament opens at 8:30 this morning at the Kauai Community College tennis courts.
The tournament opened Thursday when the boys from the four Kauai Interscholastic Federation schools faced off at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts.
Huffman earned the top seed followed by Myrick. Waimea’s Marcus Pereira lost to Myrick, 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Kauai’s Mitchell Evens was downed by Huffman, 6-2, 6-3, rounding out the 3 and 4 seeds.
On the boys doubles court, the Kapaa brother duo of Kai and Wyatt Harrison earned the top seed, advancing through the round to face off against No. 4 seed, Waimea’s duo of Joshua Subiate and L. Medina.
The Kapaa duo of Joshua Zietz and Shawn Yamane got the No. 2 seed, meeting the No. 3 seed, Waimea’s Gilson Guillermo and R. Saiki, in the quarterfinals.
Girls results
Island School’s Michaela Fitzgerald earned the top seed followed by Mia Fitzgerald getting the second seed. Kapaa’s Kiarra Tamayose got the No. 3 seed, and Waimea’s Emily Evans filled in the No. 4 seed.
Waimea’s Ashley Pascual upset No. 4 seed Evans, 6-4, 6-4 to face No. 2 seed Mia Fitzgerald in the semifinals of the girls singles.
Pascual only started playing tennis a few weeks before the tennis season started and advanced through the ranks, now facing the No. 2 seed in the qualifying tennis tournament.
“I like to challenge these players,” said Waimea coach Adrian Alvarez. “I always throw them into the fire and they come out tougher and stronger.”
On the girls doubles court, Island School’s pair of Katy Davidson and Alex Obert earned the top seed followed by Kapaa’s Isabella Kotsol and B. Uribe getting the No. 2 seed. The Kauai pair of Tane Orial and Teyanni Esaki earned the No. 3 seed with Kapaa’s Shannon Sitzler and Chelsea Ferrer getting the No. 4 seed.
