Kauai poets – plus a songstress and some young musicians — will be weaving a spell of original poem works threaded with music Friday during the Kauai celebration of National Poetry Month in April.
The public is invited to “Tapestry,” which will be staged in the Sen. Spark M. Matsunaga Peace Garden of Storybook Theatre, 3814 Hanapepe Road, a cameo presentation during Hanapepe Art Walk Night.
Featured poets of Tapestry are Kauai’s Dawn Fraser Kawahara and Helen McManimie Sina, with Storybook Theatre founder and Executive Director Mark Jeffers.
“Writing a poem, like weaving a tapestry or creating a stunning embroidery, is a slow art,” said Kawahara, primary organizer of Tapestry and columnist for The Garden Island. “And a poem, like a tapestry, depicts a scene from life, distilled to essence after hours of thought guided by feeling – many, many drafts from beginning to end.”
Jeffers, who last year stepped into the role of Robert Louis Stevenson, once again accepted the role of guest poet (2015 persona yet to be revealed). Lisa Wilson will offer the theme song popularized by Carole King; student musicians Emma Womack and Justin Womack will offer an interlude of violin/viola numbers.
The latter part of the celebration for National Poetry Month will be opened to local and visiting poets who sign in advance to participate in the open-mic reading. This is not limited to adults; students who are crafting poems may also sign up to present. A sign-up sheet will be available from 6:30 p.m. prior to the program. A time guideline will be announced and the content of poems must be suitable for a family audience. A donation of $10 is suggested. Proceeds will support the work of Storybook Theatre of Hawaii, a nonprofit that benefits young people through educational programs.
