Red Raiders win on the road

PUHI — The Red Raider varsity boys defeated the Voyagers on Tuesday evening at Island School.

Kauai High School (7-2 KIF, 1-0 second round, 2-0 playoff) won in straight sets, 25-10, 25-11 and 25-13.

“We tried some of the boys in some of the positions that we’re going to look at maybe changing,” said Red Raiders co-head coach Dorene Matias. “The boys, they did well. Their serves went in and they played well together. They played well in the positions we put them in, and they still had a lot of energy.”

For Kauai, the game was their fourth in five days following its first round win at home against Kapaa on Monday. Red Raiders senior outside hitter Kalawaia Judd said though it’s been a lot to handle, all he and his teammates can do is “power through it.”

“We’re really banged up and tired, but we just got to get back on that grind. We just got to keep grinding, honestly,” he said.

Island School senior outside hitter David Caminos said though the team is small in comparison to the others in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, it’s not the reason why they have yet to win a match.

“We just need to put more focus and effort into it,” Caminos said. “We kind of get gun-shy when we’re down, but we don’t have anything to lose. So, there’s no reason for that.”

Judd had seven kills, including the game-winner in the third set. Senior middle Tyler Fernandez had four kills and two blocks, and senior setter Marcus Carvalho had four aces for the Red Raiders.

Sophomore opposite hitter Makoa Pratt recorded four kills and a block for the varsity Voyagers. Caminos and senior outside hitter Micah Kimi each had two kills.

Kauai’s junior varsity team defeated Island School, 2-1, winning the second and third sets, 25-19 and 26-24. The JV Voyagers won the first game, 25-22.

Kauai will play at Waimea and Island School (0-7 KIF, 0-1 second round) will play at Kapaa on Friday. The JV games will begin at 5 p.m. and the varsity teams will follow.
