Red Raiders win on Senior Night

LIHUE — Kauai High School’s varsity boys volleyball team defeated Waimea, 3-0, at home Friday night. “They’re all coming to the same goal, in their minds, and they’re working towards that same goal,” said Kauai co-headcoach Dorene Matias. “That helps with where this team is going at this point.” The Red Raider boys (10-3 KIF, 4-1 second round, 2-0 playoff) won in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19. “We got some nice blocks and a lot of nice kills, but we got to work on our coverage,” said Red Raiders senior middle LiiColipano. “Winning in three felt really good.” Waimea head coach Alton Shimatsu said the loss was disapointing, but it wasn’t because of lack of effort. He hopes histeam can end the season on a good note Saturday. “I think our biggest downfall, not to make any excuses, but compared to the other teams — we lack height. One guy is 6’4and one guy is 6’1, but it doesn’t make up for (the rest of the team),” Shimatsu said. “Other than that, I’m pretty satisfiedwith my boys. We showed we can compete in the KIF. I have no regrets and no wishes that I had anybody else on my team. “It’s not like we gave up for half of the season. We fought. It’s just that somebody’s got to win and somebody’s got to lose,”he added. “I congratulate Kauai High School on their win on Senior Night. That’s about it.” Colipano had 10 kills and two blocks. Senior outside hitter Kalawaia Judd had nine kills and a block, and senior middle TylerFernandez had eight kills and an ace for Kauai. Senior outside hitter Bobby Oliver scored 16 kills for Waimea. Senior outside hitter Howard Kanahele had six kills, and juniormiddle blocker Jayden Fu had five kills and two blocks. Eight Red Raider seniors played their last regular season home game — Colipano, Judd, Fernandez, defensive specialist KaiAnacieto, setter Raymart Ballesteros, setter Marcus Carvalho, opposite hitter Justin Poskin and opposite hitter MelvinTingzon. “I’m excited but sad because it’s my last home game, and last season,” Colipano said. If Kapaa wins, the Warrior boys will win the season’s second round and a playoff game for the KIF title will be played at adate and location to be announced. Matias said though it will be different not playing on a usual Friday, she believes the extra day of practice will be beneficial. “We have time to prepare. I think we need this time. We need the three days,” she said. “After a Senior Night like this, youhave to refocus the team. It can get tough. It affected the girls team, so I’m sure we’re going to be working really hard thenext three days.”
