Warrior boys win in extra innings

HANAPEPE — Warriors sophomore second baseman Leighton Moniz hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to break the 2-2 tie.

Kapaa scored one more run en route to beating Waimea, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon at Hanapepe Stadium. Junior first baseman Jake Rausch scored the go-ahead run off Moniz’s hit. Freshman right fielder Kalena Harder scored the insurance run.

Moniz also drove in the game-tying run in the seventh inning. Rausch scored that run, crossing home plate from second base.

Kapaa senior starting pitcher Keoki Planas, who pitched all nine innings, then struck out the side in order to end the game that went two extra innings.

Moniz scored Kapaa’s first run in the sixth inning off a wild pitch.

Menehune sophomore catcher Kai Perreira-Alquiza scored the game’s first run off a Kapaa error.

Senior center fielder Patrick Keamoai-Strickland knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Waimea’s second run. Freshman starting pitcher Charles Lopez scored the run from third base.

Lopez did not allow a run in the first five innings before Keamoai-Strickland relieved him in the sixth.

Kapaa (6-5 KIF, 3-2 second round) scored their four runs off six hits and left seven runners on base. Moniz was 4-4, hitting three singles and a double.

Waimea (3-7 KIF, 1-3 second round) got their two runs off seven hits and left four runners stranded. Lopez hit a double and a single in four at-bats.

Six Menehune seniors played their last game at Hanapepe Stadium: Keamoai-Strickland, Brayden Silva, Theron Shigematsu, Kalen “Malu” Games, Shandon SanAgustine-Nordmeier and Landon Rita.

Waimea will play Kauai (6-3 KIF, 2-1 second round) for two games Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. The first game will begin at 10 a.m.

Kapaa will host Kauai at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday for the last game of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation regular season.
