PUHI — The final Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis matches produced some keen competition Saturday ahead of the state qualifying matches which start Thursday.
Kapaa High School, resting some of its key players following last week’s grueling matches, started the day against Kauai High School at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts.
The Warriors swept the Red Raiders, 3-2 for the boys and 3-2 for the girls.
“There were several close matches,” said Kauai coach Charles Fulks. “This was a great day of tennis competition. Kapaa managed to pull off the boys’ victory without the Harrison brother, Kai and Wyatt.”
Kauai’s Mitchell Evans, battling on the boys No. 2 singles court, tested Kapaa’s Shawn Yamane before sealing the deal in three, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
On the boys doubles courts, the Raider teams in the second doubles, Shaeden Tallano and Ryan Owan, also tested Kapaa’s Makani Crowder and Kyler Tom before dropping in three, 1-6, 6-3, 3-6.
Kauai’s Grant Urmatam paired with Tyres Caberto on the boys 3rd doubles arena and despite taking the match to three sets, fell to Kapaa’s Treston Alfiler and Brandon Quilos, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6.
Kauai picked up its two victories on the girls doubles court when Tane Orial paired with Teyanni Esaki on the girls 1st doubles court to get past Kapaa’s Brittany Uribe and Shannon Sitzler, 6-2, 6-0.
Kayli Kukino teamed with Madison Rayno and came out of the test against Kapaa’s Jasmine Carnate and Chelsea Ferrer in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Kauai also went three in the girls 3rd doubles when Helena Huffman, pairing with Dareen Dameg, dropped the opener 4-6 to Kapaa’s Deidre Andaya and Kayla Takamura before Kauai answered with a 6-3 win, but could not sustain the momentum in the third set, dropping 4-6.
Over at the Kauai Community College courts, Island School prevailed 4-1 on the boys court and the Voyager girls, undefeated in KIF play, preserved its record, 4-1.
Waimea’s sole victories came on the girls 3rd doubles court where Madelle Florendo and Mia Lorenzo took three sets to get past Island School’s Mabel Kha and Genevieve Foster, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
On the boys courts, Waimea’s sole win came on the 1st doubles court where the Menehune duo of Joshua Subiate and Gilson Guillermo defeated the Voyager pair of Sam Goldberg and Ian Cowden, 6-3, 6-3.
The state qualifying meets start Thursday at 8 a.m. with the boys playing at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts and the girls squaring off at the KCC tennis courts.
On Friday, the finals for both the boys and girls take place at the KCC tennis courts starting at 8 a.m.
The Carlsmith Ball Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tennis championships take place at the Central Oahu Regional Park May 7-9.
