Waimea High School’s varsity softball team defeated Kohala of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, 11-1, Wednesday in a quarterfinals game of the DataHouse Softball Championships — Division II state tournament.
The game, which was played at McKinley High School on Oahu, ended after the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
“There was good discipline at the plate. … The pitcher wasn’t throwing a lot of strikes. There was a lot of walks,” said Waimea head coach Teddy Perreira in a phone interview following Wednesday’s game.
The No. 2 seed Menehune girls scored four runs en route to winning the quarterfinals game. Second baseman Starlynn Ripley knocked a home run in the inning.
Waimea totaled six hits and left nine runners on base.
Kohala got their one run in the fourth inning. Pinch hitter Kumulan Kaai grounded to third base to record the RBI. Shortstop Denae Rivera crossed home plate from third base on the play.
Kohala had seven hits and left five runners stranded.
Waimea will play the winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinals match between No. 3 seed Aiea of the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Saint Francis of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The game will begin at 3 p.m. today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu.
The result of the Aiea-Saint Francis game was unavailable by press time.
“I know that Aiea and Saint Francis, they both swing the bat pretty good. Playing them won’t be easy,” Perreira said about the upcoming semifinal game. “We got to swing the bat better. They swung the bat good today, but I think we can do better.”
