LIHUE — A $600,000 Incident Command Center is helping the Kauai Police Department fight crime and assist citizens.
The emergency response unit’s primary purpose is to ensure communication between agencies responding to a disaster or major incident, wrote Capt. Richard Rosa of Patrol Services Bureau.
“In the event of an islandwide phone outage, this vehicle will allow KPD to communicate with the neighbor islands or the Mainland to request assistance, if needed,” he wrote.
The blue and white vehicle, which was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was assembled and then imported to the island from Pierce Manufacturing, Wisconsin. It made its debut, during an multi-agency manhunt in December 2012 in Kalalau Valley. It has since been used on several occasions by police, who say it has been effective.
KPD also uses the ICV, which they obtained in 2007, for officer training. Qualified officers from patrol services are responsible for operation of the vehicle.
The ICV has a “sister vehicle,” a communication van, in the Kauai Fire Department.
