PUHI — Elizabeth Hahn of Kauai Bettas said she wanted to send the first “true blue” betta she got this year, but it was too young.
Hahn submitted fish for judging in the Golden State Bettas show in California which was judged earlier this month.
“This is the first show for the 2015 year and I’m excited to see what happens,” Hahn said beforehand.
She was right to be excited. Hahn, who finished No. 4 in the nation following the 2014 contests, started this year’s circuit on the right foot, earning three first places, four second places, and six third-place finishes in the field of 25 classes and 263 different fish being submitted for consideration.
She finished the show with a Reserve Best of Variety, Group A for her Female Doubletail (all types).
First-place finishes came in the Longfin Singletail Metallic Solid (Single Tail Female), the BiColor (Single Tail Male) and the Marble/Grizzle (Single Tail Female) classes.
Second-place finishes were spread over the Singletail with three awards and two in the Doubletail classifications. Her singletail winners included a Light Solid STF, Metallic Solid STM (dark and light) while her doubletails included a Patterned Longfin Male and Female Doubletails (all types).
Her cache of third place finishes also spanned the singletail and doubletail varieties, earning four in singletail and two in doubletail. A Light Solid STM, a Metallic Solid STM, also earning second place, a BiColor STF and a Butterfly STF earned places in the singletail category while a Patterned Longfin Male and Female Doubletails (all colors and types) earned ribbons in the Doubletail classification, both third place division winners also capturing second place honors.
Hahn sells her fish at the weekly Kauai Community Market, a partnership between the Kauai Farm Bureau and Kauai Community College.
