Appreciate officer’s efforts
Kudos to the KPD officer (Sorry, I did not get his name). On May 19 at about 7 p.m. I was on my moped on Kaumualii
Highway heading home. At the old haul cane bridge west of Kaumakani, I was stopped by this KPD Officer. He was courteous and very professional. He explained to me why he stopped me. He was traveling west when he observed me on my moped and turned around and stopped me at the location mentioned.
He explained, “I noticed that your moped has a flashing red light on the front (this light was built in) and flashing lights are not allowed on any kind of vehicle.”
He took a picture of the moped and the light built in because he had never seen a moped with a flashing light on front. Then he told me to disconnect it as soon as possible.
It’s good to know there are officers who are observant and informative.

Kauai opposes sanctuary expansion
To my fellow ocean users and Kauai community:
I just wanted to extend a huge mahalo to all the people who came to the Hawaii Humpback Whale Sanctuary meetings on Kauai and spoke from the heart about the expansion of the whale sanctuary to an ecosystem-based managed sanctuary. The turnout of close to 600 people in which a total of four people spoke in favor of the expansion and the rest which must total more then 150 oral and an unknown pile of written comments opposed the expansion.
After five years and 20-plus meetings with our elected officials federal, state and county on this along with the sanctuary team. Our message never changed. Kauai’s community did not want the federal sanctuary in our state waters.
To all the people who thought their voices would not be heard, I say never give up on what you know is right. Because when you get in a room with a few hundred people that feel like you, it is very powerful. Your voices were heard all the way to Washington D.C. and the leader of the national sanctuary is now on administrative leave. We have had a week to remember.
I am so proud of Kauai for spending three nights in public hearings to let the National Marine Sanctuary know we as a community did not want this.
We must make sure we stay together and never let them divide us. Mahalo for your passion for preserving the lifestyle we love on Kauai
