Yep. Many people may not know it, but May is National Burger Month.
To celebrate the month dedicated to one of the country’s most scrumptious inventions, here is a list of some of the better places on Kauai to get your hands on a juicy burger.
From Duane’s Ono-Char Burger in Anahola to MCS Grill in Hanapepe, this list will give you a good selection of places to pig out on one of America’s favorite food.
Duane’s Ono-Char Burger
Duane’s Ono-Char Burger is located in Anahola and first opened in 1975. This small ‘side of the road’ resturant is a popular establishment among locals and tourists. However, many visitors may skip over the burger joint thinking that “ono” as fish, so to prevent confusion there is a disclaimer on the menu board saying, “ono means ‘good or delicous’ in Hawaiian — this is NOT fish.” With over 14 different burger selections on the menu the possibilities are endless. Some of the burger choices are: ono (regular), cheese (American), teriyaki (shoyu), BBQ (smokey red-sauce) and local boy (teriyaki, chedder cheese and pineapple). The burgers are so big, each one has to be cut in half to give eaters a better shot at handling the load. Duane’s is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Duke’s Kauai
Duke’s Barefoot Bar is located in Lihue on Kalapaki Beach. Located just a few steps away from the Kauai Marriott, the restaurant has some tasty burger selections that is a popular, relaxing dining establishment with breathtaking views. Take a scroll down the beach and stop and take a bite. Every burger is made to perfection and comes with seasoned waffle fries or pasta salad. Some of their burger choices are: cheddar (local grass fed beef, aged cheddar, shredded lettuce, tomato, and Maui island dressing) and the mango BBQ bacon (local grass fed beef, mango BBQ glaze, cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, grilled onions). Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Hookipa Café at Puakea
Hookipa Café is located in Lihue on Puakea Golf Course. The name Hookipa, which means “hospitality” in Hawaiian, makes this the perfect place to be treated with a warm, friendly, generous welcome. Hookipa Café uses fresh ingredients and local favorite menu items for golfers and non-golfers alike. Burgers are made with 100 percent local Kauai beef. Burgers are served with french fries or Puakea chips. If you prefer, you can substitue tossed salad or garlic fries for $1.50 more. Some of their burger choices are: traditional (1/3 lb patty on a toasted sesame seed bun), teriyaki (patty smotherd in teriyaki sauce) and maui/musi swiss (patty sauteed onions, mushrooms and melted swiss cheese). Open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sueoka’s Snack Shop
Sueoka’s Snack Shop is located in the heart of Old Koloa Town. Wendy Kawaguchi and other family members opened this small snack shop on the side of Sueoka Store in the early 1980s and it has been serving the island for over 30 years. An average of about 20 pounds of hamburger is used daily to make their signature cheeseburger. They have a variety of burger options that have made this a popular stop among the locals. Some of their burger choices are: hamburger, cheeseburger and bacon cheeseburger. Reasonably priced and island famous, you’ll kick yourself for not stopping by. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
