HANAPEPE — Hundreds of people waged a battle against cancer during the 30th anniversary of the Relay for Life Saturday at the Hanapepe soccer fields.
Nearly 60 teams celebrated survivors of cancer, people who are battling the disease as well as remember those who succumbed to cancer.
“We have a team this year,” said Josie Pablo, recreation director for Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. “We’re doing this for our residents, staff, retirees, volunteers, and family members who are struggling with, or survivors of cancer.”
Mary Lardizabal, a Kapaa Middle School teacher, said the North Shore Relay for Life is currently recruiting teams for its event starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Kauai Christian Academy in Kilauea.
“We have lots of room for more teams,” Lardizabal said. “Right now, we’re at nine teams, and counting.”
