LIHUE — Kauai High School quarterback Andrew Renaud broke out for a 58-yard touchdown to end the third period Saturday during the Red and White spring football game at Vidinha Stadium.
The score came when Renaud broke to the right side, eluding Red defenders and skirting the sidelines to paydirt to break a 0-0 stalemate.
“The Red and White game is a chance for players vying for specific positions to demonstrate their ability and capability to the coaches,” said Mel Rapozo, the Kauai announcer. “It is also a chance for the coaches to see what the boys can do.”
The Red forces answered, being stalled by a pass interception when QB Aukai Albao was plucked by Bryan Perreira. Persistent in its effort, Jhustin Balisacan answered Renaud’s score with an eight-yard charge up the middle in the final period for the 6-6 deadlock.
The Red had another attempt at breaking the stalemate in the final four plays of the controlled scrimmage, but came up empty.
“This is a brand-new start,” said Kauai head coach Derek Borrero, taking the reins of the Red Raiders following a four-year hiatus. “This is not to take anything away from the coaches ahead of me, but it’s a rebuilding start.”
The returning coach said he is in a “flip role” where he needs to establish relationships with the upperclassmen, while the underclass- men are familiar with his coaching because of his coaching tenure with the Pop Warner football program through the Kauai Pop Warner Tackle Football League and the Lihue Pop Warner Association.
“We started practice in March,” Borrero said. “This has been a period of teaching, of learning, and developing trust. We’re trying to build a family — a football family. It’s going to be a long road, but I’m looking forward to the season which I think will be very competitive.”
Borrero has assembled a team of assistant coaches and staff which were very active on the field during the spring game played before a sparse audience who braved the chilling winds at Vidinha.
“We learned the x and o’s together,” Borrero said. “Our philosophy is to build life champions through the game of football, or any other sport.”
