ELEELE — Eleven Girl Scouts from the Eleele Elementary School After School Hours program wrapped up its year with a contribution to the school Wednesday.
“This is our last project for the curriculum,” said Monica Trimble, leader for Troops 4366 and 4363. “We’re done with our curriculum and next week, we’ll celebrate awards and advancements.”
Several weeks ago, the scouts were involved in a special food drive to benefit Kauai Independent Food Bank.
“We came up with more than 300 pounds of food,” Trimble said. “But among the collection were peanut butter and some peanut-based products. Some of the children are allergic to peanut products so Kelvin Moniz, the KIFB executive director, exchanged some of the products to items which are non-allergenic.”
The food was broken down into 20 bags, which will be presented to needy families at the school, said Rona Oana, school health aide.
“I’m sure the families will really appreciate this gift from the Girl Scouts,” Oana said.
In addition to the food, the scouts presented Oana with 50 pairs of new rubber slippers.
“We can always use rubber slippers,” Oana said. “We get some slippers from people who donate at the school office. These are usually used items. If we let the kids have the new slippers, that’s it — they never come back.”
Oana said the school also has a school uniform recycling program.
“We get uniforms from families who no longer can use them,” Oana said. “When we have children who need uniforms, we just give it to them.”
Trimble said the take-action program was a result of the girls brainstorming ideas during the Wednesday afternoon meetings.
“They worked really hard during the Girl Scout Cookie sales period,” Trimble said. “And they’re still going.”
