LIHUE — The Kauai High School girls 4×400 relay A Team broke a Kauai Interscholastic Federation track and field record, and Charles Samuel of the Kauai High School boys team broke the record in the boys 800-meter run on Friday before a sparse crowd which braved the brisk trade winds at Vidinha Stadium.
The excited screams of the record-breaking relay team, including Kristin Chun, Jordan Ganam, Britney Ehia and Krista Schnackenberg, was only a preview as the Red Raider girls topped the team competition with 164 points followed by the Island School Voyager women collecting 121 points. Kapaa High School (98 points) and Waimea High School (78 points) rounded out the girls field.
“I could see this 4×400 girls record early in the season,” said Kauai coach Richard Matsumoto. “But as the season went on, things happened, and it didn’t look too good. Krista Schnackenberg came back tonight, and everything lit up.”
Samuel, breaking the record unofficially in 2014, came back and did it for real in 2015.
But despite this record-breaking performance under the lights, the Red Raider men could not overtake the power and speed of the Kapaa boys who captured the KIF title on 198.5 points. Kauai followed at 131.5 points with Waimea High School getting 86 points and Island School finishing with 39 points.
“It feels good to have the trophy back at Kauai High School,” said Kauai coach Peter Riopta. “But there were some surprises out there.”
One of those was the winning of two first-place finishes by Kauai’s Kailee Arakaki, a sophomore, who edged out teammate Jordan Ganam in both the girls 100-meter and girls 200-meter runs, earning a state consideration standard with her win in the Thursday night preliminaries on a run of 13.25 seconds.
“Jordan hasn’t had Physical Education since middle school,” said her mother, Kerry Ganam. “She would set her own targets for running, setting a new one each time she surpassed her goal. She’s not very big for a runner, but Jordan said she just wants to bring the team back to the state competition.”
In addition to the KIF record in the girls 4×400 relay, the girls from all the KIF member schools earned 18 state consideration time standards.
On the boys arena, Charles’ KIF record in the boys 800-meter run set the pace, the record-breaking run earning a state auto qualifying time standard.
Overall, the boys earned five auto qualifying standards, including Island School’s Michael Miller netting the berth in the boys 3,000-meter run, Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes getting an auto standard in the boys 300-meter hurdles and the boys triple jump. Kauai’s Jassem Cumlat, surprising a lot of people on a leap breaking 21 feet in the long jump, earned an auto standard with that first finish leap.
The boys also copped 13 state consideration standards through the finals.
The Island Movers Hawaii High School Athletic Association Track & Field state championships will take place May 15 and 16 at the War Memorial Stadium on Maui.
