The Plain White T’s, the American pop band known for their popular songs, “Hey There Delilah,” “1234” and “Rhythm of Love,” is giving Kauai a free concert at the Pacific Missile Range Facility 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Gates will open at 4 p.m.
Guests can enjoy the Grammy-nomiated group on the beach near Shenanigans restaurant.
“I would like concert-goers to enjoy the experience of a great free show, the opportunity to be on the base and to realize that we appreciate all of the support that we get from our community ohana,” said Chip Kreisman, director of morale, welfare and education at PMRF. “This will be just one of more big named entertainers that we hope to bring to our base and share with our neighbors.”
The Plain White T’s are being brought to PMRF through the auspices of Navy Entertainment.
They are currently on a tour of Navy bases in Asia and PMRF will be the last stop on the tour.
The band just released their newest album, “American Nights.”
“We’ve been talking about this thing forever and we are finally ready to put it out,” Plain White T’s stated on their website shortly before the album was released March 31.
Group members are Tom Higgenson, lead vocals, keyboard, acoustic guitar; Dave Tirio, lead guitar; Tim Lopez, rhythm guitar; Mike Retondo, bass guitar and De’Mar Hamilton, drums.
Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, the punk-pop outfit took shape in 1997, 10 years before the acoustic ballad “Hey There Delilah” made them Grammy-nominated stars. Lead singer Higgenson was originally fascinated with the drums, having served as the percussionist for various rock bands during high school.
One such band was Harvey’s Daughter, whose lineup also featured bass player Ken Fletcher. Although the group disbanded, the two remained friends and quickly launched a different band, with Higgenson taking over lead duties as songwriter and singer. Drummer Tirio also joined the new lineup, bringing Plain White T’s to fruition.
“The set up will be very similar to our Independence Day celebration last year on the beach behind Shenanigan’s. The venue is beautiful and perfect for a great show. I can’t imagine a better place,” Kreisman added.
In addition to the concert, there will be food trucks, booths and base organizations selling food. Due to increased security requirements, attending adult visitors are asked to have a valid identification card with a photo on them. Children under the age of 18 are not required to have identification. No outside food or beverages, coolers, tents, pets or weapons are allowed at the family friendly event.
PMRF is working on bringing bigger bands to the island to perform.
The headliner for the PMRF Independence Day Celebration on July 3 will be the band Dishwalla.
“We are excited about having them (Plain White T’s) on PMRF and look forward to many more great events,” Kreisman said. “The more people that come out the better the opportunity will be going forward for more big shows.”
