Bonnetta Mae Cornell Schenck
Bonnetta Mae Cornell Schenck of Kapaa slipped her hand into her husband Bill’s like she did so many times before and he led her away from this world to theirs. She slipped away from us with peace and grace, surrounded by family on April 16, 2015. She wanted to die in her bed, in her room looking over her beautiful island of Kauai. She did just that. Known by friends as Bonnie, she was born on Feb. 28, 1928, in Loma Linda, California.
Bonnie lived an accomplished life. Among her many accomplishments, she was a registered nurse, a pilot, a paralegal, an educator to children and adults, a mother and a wife. She was also recognized by “Who’s Who in America” for her work with children.
Bonnie was particularly proud of her time as a flight instructor in Alaska. In her later life she received a Ph.D in clinical psychology and began a legacy of work with children. Bonnie had a heart to serve others, especially children. She spent many years working in the San Francisco School District within the district’s school psychology programs and was know as a fierce defender of the underprivileged and abused. After retiring to Kauai, she continued her work with children while acting as guardian ad litem for Family Court of Kauai. Bonnie also served as a mediator helping to resolve issues and repair marriages. Doing all this with Bill at her side as there rarely was a Bill without Bonnie or a Bonnie without Bill.
Bonnie met and married the love of her life, William A. Schenck, in Marin County, California, in 1978. This was the thing she was most proud of. Bill/Dad and Bonnie/Mom set a goal for their marriage — they set the bar high and we all should move forward to experience their kind of love. They had an epic love affair that lasted until Bill went to play basketball at Anahola as he always did on Wednesdays and died of heart failure on the court. When Bonnie found out that Bill would never be home she decided that she would go be with him — that took 32 days. It is said that Bonnie passed of a broken heart.
Bonnie is survived by her loving brother, Bill Cornell (Marilyn); her loving children; Calvin D. Smith, Robley E. Smith, David J. Smith, Melissa Mae Kinnersley (Ian), Patricia Lincourt, Christopher Schenck (Christie Haeiin); grandchildren, Jonathan Cornell (Ashley), Zachariah Kinnersley, Casey Smith, Jackson Smith and great-grandchild; Bailey Cornell.
As a family we wish to express our gratitude to our mother’s caregivers and especially Hospice of Kauai for their support during this time. Special thanks to the basketball team who have not forgotten us and has been here to help with all arrangements.
Bonnie was an amazing mother with an equally amazing life spirit who loved the island of Kauai and its people. She will be forever loved and missed. Bill and Bonnie, watch over us all.
The family will have a Celebration of Life for these two amazing people sometime in June. Please stay tuned for notices of when and where.
The family is being assisted by The Garden Island Mortuary.

He shall be missed.
