Giving cancer the boot

WAILUA — Kauai’s female soccer players came together to give cancer the boot Sunday during the Kauai Island Ladies AdultSoccer third annual Breast Cancer Awareness soccer event at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park in Wailua. Proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society. “When we make the donation, the funds we raise will all stay on Kauai,” said Emily Medeiros. “We’re all Kauai women, helpingraise funds for the fight against breast cancer.” Women soccer players of all ages congregated for the event that featured 32 players being broken into four eight-a-sideteams playing in a round-robin format. “I think I forgot how to kick,” said Taryn Dizon, a former Waimea High School goalkeeper. “It’s been so long since I’ve toucheda soccer ball.” Medeiros said the fundraiser got the support from both Duke’s restaurant at Kalapaki Beach and Keoki’s in the PoipuShopping Village. “With their help, we were able to get first-, second- and third-place awards as well as a limited amount of shirts for the girls,”Medeiros said. “The girls register (with the registration fee going to the American Cancer Society), they get a free shirt, placeawards, and we might even have some left over for pizza after — that’s a pretty good deal.” Charlene Quinones, helping with registration, said the event started three years ago after Emily’s mom passed from breastcancer. “Emily used to play soccer when she was in high school,” Quinones said. “She still likes to play soccer, and after her motherdied, she pulled this event together. It’s for a good cause.”
