KALAHEO — Kaulupono Basketball, host of the Kaulupono Summer Basketball League, won two of its matches Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Sparked by three girls in double digit scoring, Kaulupono’s Division 3 girls walked off with a 39-7 win over the Westside girls, Momi Martins doing the sole basket in the first half to prevent a shutout at the buzzer.
Braelyn Cayaban topped the Kaulupono D3 girls with 12 points in the win, followed by Kierstin Gummerus with 11 points and Kaye Serapio with 10 points.
Cori Burton bucketed three points to lead the Westside girls’ effort.
Hazel Serapio took the lead for the Kaulupono Division 4 girls with 10 points in its 27-15 win over Team Central in the nightcap of four games played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
In the sole boys’ game, Mayson Broyles and Aden Ringor each netted six points to lead the Supersonics Division 3 boys to a 19-13 edge over the hard-pressing Yungballers coached by Charlie Brown Jr. Kylan Constantino added five, four of which were scored in the second half, and a pair of free throws from Bryce Fernandez closed the scorebooks.
Arnie Fernandez and McKenzie O’Day each scored five points to keep the Yungballers in the chase, getting help from Randall Fernandez with a pair and Angelito Anagaala Jr., one of two of the smallest players on the team, getting a digit.
“We have two teams,” said Supersonics coach Fran Constantino. “This division 3 team got its third victory — barely — since the season started. The other team, division 4, is still looking for its first win.”
Hachelle Iwamoto and Seijia Makanani each scored four points and Alexis Ann Yam dropped three points to lead the Dream Team to a 13-5 win over Team Central in a division 4 game. Kiani Pia Salvador rounded out the win with a pair.
Tia Jaquias topped the Team Central effort with four points. Brianna Bernardo rounded out the scoring with a digit.
The summer league gets put on hold until Monday because some of its teams will be participating in the annual Merv Lopes Kauai Classic Hoops tournament which opens today and will continue through Sunday afternoon.
