LIHUE — A cross section of cultures will converge at Kapaa Beach Park and everyone is invited to watch.
Aloha Church Kauai is hosting the second Aloha Summer Fest that will feature a number of demonstrations and meals from different traditions beginning at 5:30 each night July 22-24.
“It’s summer so why not have something for everyone to do or watch?” said Grace Galiza, event organizer and wife of the pastor Vill, on why the Lihue church is putting on the free bash. “It’s good to get people together on this island.”
Dancing and shows will display the roots of Portuguese, Samoan, Filipino, Japanese and Hawaiian culture, to name a few. The goal of the event, which debuted two years ago and is trying to become a bi-annual celebration, is to bring people together, no matter how similar or different.
Even a hip hop dance session will be part of the act Thursday night because the youth “is a culture by itself.”
“They have their way of singing and expressing themselves,” Galiza said.
Dinner starts at 6 each night. Presentations and talks will run through the evening, but each night ends with a free movie, such as “Heaven is For Real” and “God’s is Not Dead,” that starts around 8:15.
The church used to put on a festival years ago, before Hurricane Iniki, but discontinued it. People asked the Galizas if it was going to ever return, which it did two years ago and will again next week.
“This year everything came together with the park and the stage, so we thought, ‘OK, let’s do it.’ I think it’s going to be a good thing,” Galiza said. “We just want to be a nice part of the community.”
