A Kauai-based author and former editor of The Garden Island Newspaper will have a talk story on his book, “Memoirs of Henry Obookiah,” in the Lihue Parish Hall on Tuesday, July 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Presented by the Kauai Historical Society, Christopher L. Cook will discuss the Kauai-related aspects of Henry Obookiah, one the first native Hawaiians to convert to Christianity and the first Hawaiian to become a Western scholar.
Born `Ōpūkaha`ia on Hawaii Island, Obookiah inspired American Protestant missionaries to come to Hawaii in the 19th century.
Additionally, Cook will detail the connection between Obookiah and Caleb Brintnall, the sea captain who brought the Hawaiian to Connecticut.
Cook will also reveal Brintall’s role in Russia’s explorations of the Pacific Northwest and the building of Russian Fort Elisabeth in Waimea.
