If you want to test your fitness level, see how fast you are on a stand up paddleboard or just have fun with soccer, golf and hula, the Ohana Fit Fest is for you.
The nonprofit Kauai North Shore Community Foundation will be hosting the event starting at noon Saturday at Pine Trees in Hanalei. It will focus on a healthy and active lifestyle and should be popular with residents and visitors, said director Ken Rosenthal.
The competitive side of the festival will feature a stand up paddleboard sprint and an obstacle course, with age levels from keiki to kupuna. There will be prizes and awards for individuals and for teams.
The fun and fit side will feature beach flag games, ultimate Frisbee, hula hoop, soccer, hackidoo, golf chipping, face painting, hula demonstration, wellness expo and silent auction.
Proceeds will go toward projects to enhance the health and wellness of the North Shore.
“Of course, our long term goal is still to build a community recreation center on the North Shore,” Rosenthal said.
Registration in the competitions will be free to youth 18 and under, and $15 for other age groups.
Last year’s inaugural Fit Fest attracted about 100 people. Organizers expect to double that amount this year.
A main event is the fit challenge, which includes a timed, six-station, 200-yard obstacle course. Entrants will have to — as quickly as they can — cross a narrow, eight-foot long balance beam, crawl under a bar, complete a lateral cone run, jump over hurdles, scramble through car tires and flip a tire (from a bicycle tire to a tractor tire depending on age). And they must do so alone, while the crowd watches, so that might make some a little nervous.
“That’s probably the one that’s the hardest,” Rosenthal said of the tire flip.
The half-mile stand up paddle board sprint starts and finishes at the water’s edge of Pine Trees. A few paddleboards will be available for those who don’t own one.
The free expo will feature health and fitness practitioners providing demonstrations and information.
There will be medals and prizes.
Rosenthal said the Ohana Fit Fest is a friendly, fun affair more than focusing on who is actually the fittest.
“Anyone who comes out to compete or watch will have a good time,” he said.
Registration is available at knscf.org or sign up on Saturday at the Ohana Fit Fest.
