Mahalo nui loa from Kauai veteran
I would like to thank Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and her staff in Hawaii for their quick response to have HUD raise their payment standard by 10 percent for veterans in Kauai who have HUD vouchers.
This means that I have $1,100 per month to rent a one-bedroom apartment with all utilities included.
I would also like to thank Sandy Adachi of the Kauai County Housing Agency for her close communication with me. Matthew Murray at Supportive Services For Veteran Families Program of Catholic Charities Hawaii helps me search for places to rent and will pay the deposit.
Aloha to the people of Kauai who wish me the best in my quest to lease a “decent, safe and sanitary unit to live in” as is stated in the Housing Choice Voucher Program. Seniors in Lihue on fixed incomes so often can not afford decent food.
Aloha to the volunteers of St. Michael’s Church Loaves and Fishes Pantry Foodbank. This foodbank provides food for many seniors. Donations of meat, dairy, and fresh vegetables are always needed and quickly distributed.
Aloha to the young people who were distributing bags with three MREs, rice, peanut butter, and a roll of toilet paper. Now I’m ready in case a storm hits.

Mistake to repeal barking dog law
The County Council seems poised to repeal the barking dog ordinance. This is too bad because it sent a signal to dog owners that it is not OK for your dogs to bark all night.
Now people feed their dogs at night and Kalaheo is quiet throughout the evening. Previously there were always choruses of dogs howling back and forth across the valley, only stopping at dawn.
Actually, the council did not need to make B&Bs illegal. With all the barking dogs back no one will want to stay at any B&B on Kauai.
New term limits for councilmembers? How about one week?

Humane society actions are cruel
The behavior of the Kauai Humane Society Board of Directors and Penny Cistaro has become extremely disturbing. An audit obviously needs to be done on the Kauai Humane Society Board of Directors, so we know exactly who and where funding is going to and being used. The lack of any proper overseeing of actions committed under Penny Cistaro’s supervision seems to indicate that we will surely see someone/or perhaps many are somehow benefiting (most likely financially) by killing healthy animals quickly while putting minimal efforts into saving them.
The recent firings and statements by several employees/volunteers gives us some insight into just how awful things are behind closed doors at the Kauai Humane Society. To those striving to right the mismanagement, wrongs, please know I and so many others applaud you.
Please keep up the strong fight Kauai community. Penny Cistaro and many of the board members obviously think they can manipulate and fool you, that you do not care enough to stand strong against very wrong, cruel actions. The Kauai community has proven many times they are not to be underestimated in such a manner. The community has spoken and will continue the protest until justice for all the cruelty and and severe wrongdoings committed by Penny Cistaro, with the support of the board of directors, happens.
