Elijah Bautista

Elijah Caleb Bautista of Hanamaulu passed away in Kapiolani Memorial Hospital for Women and Children on July 10, 2015, at the age of three months. He was born in Honolulu on March 29, 2015.

He is survived by his parents Rory and Catherine Bautista; three brothers, Juvann Lerry Bautista, Seth Dominic Bautista, Errle Dustin Bautista; maternal grandparents, Juanito and Leonora Menor, all of Hanamaulu; paternal grandparents, Jovencio and Fe Bautista of the Philippines; numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. and mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Lihue Cemetery.

Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Bautista family with arrangements.

Richard Ragudo Jr.

Richard J. Ragudo Jr. of Kapaa passed away on July 10, 2015, at the age of 51. He was born in Lihue on Nov. 18, 1963, was an avid diver and fisherman and was a Mason by trade.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Dolores V. “Dolly” Ragudo Sr.; four brothers, Terence (Corrine), Paulino (Puni), Randy and Quinten (Malia); seven children, Kaikoa, Tasha, Shauday, Shai, Jedidiah Ragudo; and Jacob and Triton Lombardo; six grandchildren; numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at St. Catherine Church with visitation from 9 a.m. and mass celebrated at 11 a.m.

John Kaauwai

John Keonaona Kaauwai of Anahola, Kauai, Hawaii, passed away on July 8, 2015, at the age of 81. Born on Aug. 18, 1933, in Kapaa, Kauai, he was a retired supervisor for The Department of Transportation, Highways Division.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Isaiah and Daisy Kaauwai; and son, Steven Kaauwai.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara Kaauwai; daughters, Cheryl (Tony) Wilson, Kathleen Ibaan, Gaylynn (Judy) Go, Lehua (Dane) Kaauwai-Krueger, Lisa Abell; sons, John (Charlotte) Kaauwai, Duane Kaauwai; 23 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; as well as his brother, William Kaauwai; sisters, Henrietta (Robert) Gonsalves, Annette Kaauwai and Linda Iwamoto. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and an aunt.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, at Kapaa First Hawaiian Church. Visitation at 9 a.m., Service at 10 a.m., Burial to follow at Kapaa First Hawaiian Church Cemetery.

The family is being assisted by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary, Koloa, Kauai.

Kathy Louis

Kathy Joy Denise Louis, 54, of Omao, Kauai, passed away on July 3, 2015, at Straub Hospital. She was born on July 17, 1960, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a baker with Koloa School Cafeteria.

Kathy is preceded in death by her mother, Emily Keoho Aucion; grandmother, Elizabeth Haluapo; sisters, Makalapua Haluapo, Hattie Telles, Marylyn Gerardo and Rose Leilani Garcia; brothers, Ioane and Kawano Haluapo, Albert Keoho, Sr. Guardians, James and Mary Gerardo; and granddaughter Ivy Louis.

She is survived by her husband, Matthew Louis; daughter, Bridget Louis; son, Matthew (Rosanna) Louis; grandson, Anthony Louis; granddaughter, Lily Louis. Kathy also is survived by her sisters, Joyce (Terry) Daligdig, Alison (Clayton) Silva Sr., and Brenda (Rey) Coloma; brothers, Wayne Sees, Howard Sees, James Gerardo, Alan Gerardo, Brian (Shanell) Gerardo, Clifford (Dannette) Lee, Edward Keoho, Sr., David (Bruna) Lam and Francis Lam; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, auntie, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday July 24, 2015, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapelin Koloa from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday July 25, 2015, at Lihue First Church at 10 a.m. Services and Inturnment to follow.

The family is being assisted by Borthwick/Kauai Mortuary.

Francis Ferreiro

Francis Allan Ferreiro of Austin, Texas, passed away on Dec. 30, 2014, at the age of 64. He was born on March 4, 1950, in Lihue, Hawaii.

For many years he lived in Los Angeles, California and Austin, Texas, where he retired as a managing Electronic Engineer and also owned Kika Toner.

He is the son of Lawrence A. “Larry” and Joyce H. Ferreiro, who predeceased him. He is survived by his sister, MaBel Ferreiro (Chief Ret. Brian S. Fujiuchi) and his children, Sean (Sharon) of Lake Elsinor, California, Charlotte Murphy of Austin, Texas, Kimberly (William) Mitchell of Buda, Texas and Joseph Ferreiro of Austin, Texas; as well as grandchildren Michael Ferreiro, Gweni Murphy, Ashley Murphy, Jason Murphy, Mya Mitchell and Liam Mitchell.

Services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015, at St. Catherine Church in Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii, with visitation starting at 9 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow at St. Catherine Cemetery and scattering of ashes following, fronting Kaiakea Lookout.

Services were earlier held on January 8, 2015, at Trinity Chapel Church, Austin Texas with arrangements by Solace Mortuary, Austin, Texas.

Chiyo Ueunten

Chiyo Ueunten of Kalaheo passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on June 28, 2015, at age 88. She was born in Koloa to the late Ushi and Kamato Gushiken on Sept. 15, 1926. She is survived by husband, Sensuke; sons Paul (Bobbie) of San Jose, California, David (Lei) of Honolulu, Gary (Glenna) of Lawai, Wesley (Julie) of El Cerrito, California; sister, Harue Oshiro of Waipahu; and eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Kyle, Brett, Amy, Trent, Christina, Teresa, and Lyle.

Chiyo graduated from Koloa School 1941, Kauai High School 1945, UH Bachelor of Arts 1950, UH Certificate in Social Work 1951. She worked as a Social Worker and as School Counselor at Kalaheo and Kauai High School. Her comforting presence and loving support of family, friends and community will be missed.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at Koloa Union Church in Koloa. Visitation starts at 10 a.m., service at 11 a.m. followed by lunch. Inurnment will be at the Koloa Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Kei Hirano

Kei Hirano, 84, of Kauai, died on June 20, 2015, in Kailua. He was born in Kalaheo, Kauai. He was a Circuit Court Judge and a Korean War U.S. Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Jessie M. Hirano; son, Todd Y. Hirano; daughter, Sharyl J. (Tom) Hirano; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family has chosen to hold private services.

Sadayoshi Kunioka

Sadayoshi “Smally” Kunioka, age 96, passed away peacefully in the company of his loving wife at the Kauai Care Center in Waimea, Kauai on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. He was born on Dec. 10, 1918, in Makaweli Camp 1, now Kaumakani, where he lived for 94 years. He was the third oldest of five siblings.

At age 15, he worked at Olokele Sugar Co., where he became a respected diesel engine mechanic. In 1958, when he was 39, he married Hiroko Kawano, with whom he had three children. He retired from his position at Olokele Sugar Co. after over 50 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, watching sports on television, any kind of gambling, eating ice cream, going on walks, and talking story at McDonald’s. Sadayoshi was hardworking, generous, clever, creative, funny, and loved animals. He is survived by his wife, Hiroko; sisters, Shizumi and Miyono; children, Phyllis (Tony), Laura (Dan), and Steven (Lisa); and granddaughter, Sarah. His family misses him greatly and cherishes his memory and legacy.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, July 22,,2015, at Waimea Honpa Hongwanji Church, 4675 Menehune Road, Waimea. The family will greet friends beginning at 11 a.m., and the service will commence at noon. Aloha attire. Luncheon to follow. No flowers.

‘Vinny’ Bryan

Edward Vincent “Vinny” Bryan passed away peacefully at home in Wainiha, Kauai on June 8, 2015, at the age of 70, surrounded by family and close friends. Born July 22, 1944, in Florida, his family moved to Hawaii in 1946, where he was raised on Oahu. After attending Punahou School, Howe Military School, UH Manoa, and Cal Poly in Calif., he came to Kauai in 1969 where he made it his home for the next 47 years. He was retired from construction in 2003, but his true passions were music, surfing, shaping boards, art and ohana.

Vinny was preceded in death by his father, Edward and mother, Pauline Peter Bryan; sons, Kenneth Vincent Bryan, Jaya Bonderov; and grandson, Payton Kekaialoha Bryan-Chung.

He is survived by his wife, Chris Bryan of Wainiha; brother, Michael “Corky” Bryan of Puhi; sisters, Kathy (Dennis) Racki of Wisconsin, Cristianne Kaui Lucas of Oahu, and Mapuana Haas of Missouri; children, Paul (Crystalyn) Bryan of Hanalei, Maile Bryan of Kapaa, Chandra Levesque, and Sophia (Jonah Neumann) Levesque of Wainiha; grandchildren, Paul-Lucas Makoa Okalani Bryan, Mahealani Taylor Bryan, Isabella Mahealani Perreira, Devin Kamalei Perreira, Olivia Pulelehua Neumann and Leila Kamaile Kawamura, all of Kauai; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; as well as many close friends.

A life-long ocean enthusiast and water-man, Vinny was known for his experimental board designs, surfing, and sailing. He was also a gifted musician, playing Hawaiian slack key and writing music most of his life. Vinny was a man of many talents and skills, always ready to help or lend his expertise to any situation. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life and pa’ina will be held for Vinny on Sunday, July 26, 2015, at 11 a.m., noon memorial and prayer at Waipa (makai side) 1/4-mile north of Hanalei town. A flower paddle out will follow. Please bring leis and loose flowers.

The family would like to thank Kauai Hospice for the care Vinny received in his final weeks, as well as Kauai Memorial Gardens for assisting with the arrangements.

Duane ‘Kalani’ Dawson Sr.

Duane “Kalani” Francis Kaleiokalani Dawson Sr., left this earth on Thursday, July 9, 2015. Brought into this world by his mother, Clarice Mapuana Bruhn Kapana and father, Arnold Richardson, Kalani’s birth date was Dec. 6, 1945.

Kalani was raised and nurtured by his grandmother and grandfather, Florence Lyman and Paul Ogden Dawson Sr.

Kalani’s siblings, sisters, Puaala Wong, Kaui Kapana, Mihala Lee, Michele Baird; and brothers, Jarrett Bruhn, Abraham Kapana, Leighton Kapana, Sandy Kapana, Joseph Kapana, Francis Kapana; their spouses; children and ohana all appreciated and respected him.

Kalani said, “my greatest accomplishment is my wife, Puna and the legacy of our children, Dondi, Rillo, Kalei, Dustin, Chelsey, Damon, Kristin, Denby; our grandchildren, Chassidy, Joey Sr., Chandi, Daron, Chanee, Tresten, Micah, Kalani Boy, Ryse, Hoakalei, British, Eonipono, Ayva, London, Kamakana, Meha, our great-grandchildren, Chawai, Jr., Hazyn, Xaenon, Levi, Gema, Treyten.”

A celebration of Kalani’s life will be held Aug. 9, 2015, at the Wailua River Mouth at 10 a.m. To follow, please join the family for a luau luncheon 11:30 a.m. at Smith’s Tropical Gardens.

Steven Wheeler

Steven Davis Wheeler of Lihue, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2015, at the age of 70. He was born in Banana River, Florida. He lived most of his adult life in Minnesota where he graduated from Macalester College and William Mitchell School of Law. Early in his career he was a corporate attorney and officer with Northwest Airlines. He then went on to be the chief judge of the Workers Compensation Court of Appeals, and retired as a District Court Judge in Ramsey County, St. Paul Minnesota.

Steve is survived by his wife, Margaret Wheeler; two children, Benjamin Wheeler and Heidi Mueller; two step-children, Christine D’Amico and Michael Johnson; and 10 amazing grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Catherine Wilson and Nancy Flippert; and one brother, James Wheeler.

A celebration of his life will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at 4 p.m. with a pupu reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kauai Hospice or St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.

Hazel Yong Kawada

Hazel Yong Kawada passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on July 5, 2015, at the age of 85. Born on June 28, 1930, in Hanalei, she was a front desk clerk with Coco Palms and a coordinator for the museum.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Pon Lee Yong and Bernice K. Akui; and sister, Levinia “Maka” Kaauwai.

She is survived by her husband, Masami “Pop” Kawada; three sons, Clayton (Aurora-Ann) of Kapaa, Wilbert (Sun U) of Washington, and Randall (Debbie) of Kapaa; daughter, Cathy Ellen (Ichiro) Nakamoto of Japan; two grandchildren, Andrew (Mona) Kawada and Aaron (Abigail) Kawada of Oakland, California; two great-grandchildren, Drew and Aiden Kawada; brother, Pak Sheong “Porky” Yong of Waimea; sisters, Gloriana “Nani” Lane of Mililani, Oahu, Alice Pacheco of Kilauea; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Kapaa First Hawaiian Church. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with services to follow at 10 a.m.

Family suggests casual attire and to please omit flowers, but leis are welcomed.
