LIHUE — In a coordinated effort to assist in noise abatement and abide by established regulations, seven of the 11 aircraft tour companies on Kauai are participating in staffing a telephone help line available for the public to report complaints about low-flying aircraft and related noise issues.
The Kauai Air Tour Help Line (KATHL) fields calls during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. The KATHL phone number is (808) 639-5566 and messages left after business hours are handled the following day.
The help line operator investigates each complaint. The investigation is accomplished by checking flight paths, time of day and identifying colors and markings of the aircraft being reported as well as obtaining feedback from operators. Once the information is compiled, the operator will then report back to the caller.
A quarterly report detailing the number of calls received and the results of the investigations are furnished to all participating Kauai aircraft tour operators, in addition to related county agencies.
Participating Kauai aircraft tour companies include Jack Harter Helicopters, Blue Hawaiian, Safari, Mauna Loa, Sunshine Helicopters, Island Helicopters, and Wings Over Kauai. The Kauai Air Tour Help Line program has been in operation since 2009.
