NAWILIWILI — Hard tacks and gambles earned Fast Company its second win Thursday during the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Horse and Pony Shoreline Series, Race No. 3 at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
The win gives Fast Company the overall lead with two wins and just one race remaining this Thursday.
Fast Company pulled off two hard tacks and broke the traditional lines to edge out Bonjolea II in the final leg of of the horse phase — reserved for bigger boats — crossing the finish line at 30 minutes, 44 seconds elapsed sail and correcting to 30:47 PHRF.
OZone, with Bill Evslin at the stick, slipped across at 31:00 elapsed, correcting to 31:03 PHRF for the runner-up berth.
Bonjolea II, in strong contention for the lead, was the third boat overall, crossing on a 31:11 elapsed sail, corrected to 33:14 PHRF and the No. 4 spot.
Papaau, coming off a strong start with Bonjolea II, finished third following a 33:33 elapsed sail and correcting to 32:07 PHRF.
Speedy (35:02 elapsed, 35:05 PHRF) and Coyote (38:27 elapsed, 35:01 PHRF) rounded out the horse standings.
But that was just half of the race as Kevin Arndt of Bonjolea II held off a challenge from Evslin to take the pony phase of the race, pulling his Topper across the line before more than 30 spectators at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor launch ramp.
Jim Saylor, topping the pony races in the previous two races for Fast Company was relegated to third place. This put Fast Company and OZone into a tie for the lead with each boat collecting four points, a point better than Bonjolea II who settled into third place.
