ELEELE — Carol Nacion holds memories of Holy Cross Church close to her heart. And after a decade as church secretary, she has a lot of them.
“I love church and I wanted to give back to the Lord because he gave me so much blessings,” Nacion said.
The 85-year-old recently retired and said she will miss helping the parish’s people.
“I know most of them and I feel like I got a good relationship with them so it’s hard leaving,” she said.
As secretary, she had many responsibilities. She co-coordinated the church’s parish picnics, helped with repairs at Holy Cross and Sacred Heart Church in Eleele, made arrangements for baptisms, funerals and weddings and coordinated people to help with the church’s cleaning and decoration.
As new priests entered the parish Nacion was happy to welcome them and believed helping them adjust to the parish was a reward in and of itself. Her devotion to the church also created a bereavement ministry for those who had suffered the loss of a loved one.
“I think I accomplished some good in there, I hope anyway,” she said.
As Nacion looks to the future, she said she hopes the best for HCC and its people.
“I hope for it to grow with more volunteers, more people getting involved and that they’ll be more involved in community events, not only church events,” she said.
A retirement party for Nacion is set for Friday at the church’s hall.
She was pleased to be able to serve Holy Cross as its secretary since 2005.
“I was able to develop some good relationship with the people there,” Nacion said. “It was a rewarding type of work.”
