LIHUE — Excitement on tap for all of the nearly 150 guests to the Contractors Association of Kauai general membership meeting, Tuesday evening at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Topping the exciting news, three high school graduates were joined by two college students in accepting scholarships to pursue their goals of a career in engineering.
Bryson Baligad, the son of Pamela Kaui Baligad and Brian Baligad of Kapaa, will be entering the Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington with an engineering major. He is a member of the Kapaa High School Class of 2015.
Majael Cantu, another Kapaa High School graduate, is looking to a career in engineering so his parents, Stacie and Ismael Cantu, can retire. He enters Gonzaga University in the fall with a major in civil engineering.
Aleya Abeshima is looking at engineering to get a feel for what her father, James Abeshima of Shioi Construction, goes through as an engineer. The graduate of Mililani High School will be entering the University of Washington with a mechanical engineering major.
The three high school graduates are joined buy Dade Apao and Angelique Silvestre, both home for the summer from college.
Apao, the son of Katherine and Dirk Apao, is currently a junior in environmental engineering at the California Polytechjnic State University at San Luis Obispo.
Silvestri, the daughter of Angelita and Roman Silvestre of Kapaa, is a sophomore at the University of Portland majoring in civil engineering.
In addition to the scholarships, each of the scholars were congratulated and presented legislative commendations from Kauai Rep. Derek Kawakami and James Tokioka and Hawaii Senate President Ron Kouchi before the legislative team adjourned to another function.
The CAK awards scholarships to dependents of employees and staff of its member companies.
A major portion of the scholarship funds are derived from the annual CAK scholarship golf tournament which will be contested Aug. 8 at the Puakea Golf Course.
There is an early registration deadline of July 24 for the tournament which plays as a two-person aggregate net score.
This year’s 22nd annual event features special Hole-in-One contests and door prizes as well as a 3-Putt contest sponsored by Aloha Equipment Rentals, a Million Dollar Shootout sponsored by Honsador Lumber, and a grand prize of a trip to Las Vegas.
Applications for the CAK scholarships will be available at high school counselors’ offices from mid-January.
CAK Presidemt Lanell Miyamoto announced a contract agreement with the Hawaii Medical Services Association for a group health insurance program for CAK member companies which was launched on Tuesday.
Paul Kosasa, president and CEO of the ABC Stores, was the featured keynote speaker, discussing the company’s expansion plans for Kauai, Hawaii, and the Pacific Basin.
The CAK was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kauai. CAK is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.
