KAPAA — Cub Scouts from Pack 148 “beat the heat” Sunday, taking advantage of the Fun in the Sun event at Kapaa Beach Park.
Beat the Heat was the second of three activities planned by Pack 148 in an attempt at winning the National Summertime Pack Award. They joined the Fun in the Sun event, which continues today, hosted by the Garden Angels Party Rentals.
“We do one activity for each of the summer months,” said Cammy Moku, a Cub Scout mother for the pack sponsored by the Lihue Christian Church. “In June, we visited the Smith’s Tropical Paradise where the Cubs had a scavenger hunt and hike. This activity is called ‘Beat the Heat’ and involves activities where the Cubs learn about good sportsmanship, working together as a team, and problem solving. To do this, they had relay races, a three-legged race, Koob, a new lawn game involving strategy, a water balloon toss, and now, they’ve disappeared into the forest of inflatables.”
Kehau Durant, the office manager for Garden Angel Party Rentals, owned by Pete Gallardo, said the Fun in the Sun event is one of two they host as a way of giving back to the community.
“We do this on the Fourth of July weekend,” Durant said.
“We also do one during the Labor Day weekend. Fun in the Sun allows people to enjoy the entire day riding as many rides as they want on any, or all of the inflatable features for a reasonable flat rate. They can come as many times as they want during the time we’re here, and it’s not unusual for people to plan events around Fun in the Sun, such as the Cub Scouts did.”
Coach Mikey Cardinez of the Kawaihau Intermediate 50-70s state championship baseball team said Garden Angels approached the team to see if members would want to do activities at the Kapaa Beach Park to help raise funds for their upcoming regional tournament.
“We had the laulau sale near the skate park Saturday,” Cardinez said. “But we had some people working at Fun in the Sun doing ice-cold coconuts and other baked goods, and the people working the park said business was pretty good. We’ll be doing a car wash and having some food Saturday during the Saturday Market at the All Saints Gym before we leave for the tournament.”
In addition to the Cub Scout activity and the Kawaihau fundraising effort, the Garden Angel Party Rentals also had inflatables at the Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky and a birthday party in one corner of the park.
“We also have a keiki area in the shade for the toddlers,” Durant said. “People are also welcome to bring their own tents (like the Cub Scout parents) where they can set up for a day’s fun in the sun.”
Moku said the pack’s final event for the National Summertime Pack Award will take place Aug. 12, the day before the Kauai County Farm Fair opens, and will involve Scouting recruitment.
“The Cub Scouts were so anxious to get into the water, they left without having lunch,” said Moku. “We have 20 Cubs here today to ‘beat the heat.’ Altogether, we have 35 Cub Scouts in the pack led by Cubmaster Glenn Batoon.”
Fun in the Sun continues today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kapaa Beach Park. Access to all the inflatables is $15.
