POIPU — Fran McDonald of the Family Fun Run/Walk hosted by the Kukuiula Canoe Club already had event shirts for sale Friday during the launch of the 2015 Koloa Plantation Days.
“Registration for the run and walk is done online for the July 26 event,” McDonald said. “But we have event shirts from previous years’ runs along with the signature Koloa Plantation Days shirts. This year’s run shirts will be pretty — they’re yellow, and will be available at the run.”
The hoolaulea featured the opening ceremonies for the Koloa Plantation Days. It enjoyed a change in venue after starting at the Sheraton Kauai Resort and moving to the Poipu Beach Park last year, surviving a storm which tried to put a damper on the festivities.
“This is the first time we’re hosting it at the Poipu Beach Athletic Club,” said Peter Baldwin, a PBAC manager. “In fact, this is the first musical venture we’re hosting, ever. I wonder how many people the Main Lawn, where two tennis courts used to be, can hold.”
The 10-day Koloa Plantation Days, with the theme of “The Legacy Lives On,” celebrates the plantation lifestyle and heritage which molded Koloa and Poipu into what it is today.
Other events over this weekend include the Historic Hapa Trail Walk, the 16th annual Plantation Days Rodeo on Saturday and Sunday, keiki fishing at Waita Reservoir, the Poipu Kai Charity Tennis, a Miniature Golf Tournament at the Lawai Beach Resort, and the Mixed Plate free live music at the Old Koloa Town Courtyard.
