Racers and runners, prepare to get dirty.
The Garden Island Motorcycle Club, in partnership with Kuhio Auto Group, will be hosting the Kauai Mud Out 2015 on Sunday, Aug. 16 in Omao.
“Basically, it’s like a mud bog. It’s a bunch of guys who pretty much are motor enthusiasts. It’s like drag racing in the mud,” said GIMC President Bertram Almeida. “Instead of (a quarter-mile) on the drag strip, this is actually a much shorter distance. It’s actually about 150 to 300 feet.”
Anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 spectators attended past mud outs at the Wailua Track, but the last one was around 2004.
“We’re trying to bring this back,” Almeida said. “This is the first one since, and there’s been a lot of response. We got a lot of people excited. … We’re expecting about 40 to 50 participants. People are flying from outer islands.”
Those who wish to participate in the mud out can fill out forms at Kuhio Auto Group in Lihue. Deadline to register is Aug. 10. Cash prizes will be awarded — $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third.
Also, spectators have a chance to earn cash prizes in the Dash for Cash contests, where $100 will be up for grabs in each one.
Spectators participate by running through the mud and the winner is whoever gets to the other side to grab the $100 first.
“There’s going to be three for them,” Almeida said of the popular race.
And anyone who resembles bombshell Daisy Duke from the popular TV show “Dukes of Hazzard” has a chance to win, too.
A Daisy Duke Look-Alike contest will offer up $250 to whomever fills the role closest. Carnival games, free shave ice for kids and live music will also be on hand.
Almeida said a portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society and a local couple, Ed and Carol Horner of Kekaha, who are both battling cancer themselves.
Tickets can be bought at the gate the morning of the event. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Gates will open 7 a.m. Information: Almeida, 651-3000. www.gimc.us.
