KEKAHA — It’s like two traditions blended together to make one fantastic evening.
There’s the cultural displays on leis making and fish net weaving mixed with the recognizable boom of fireworks on the Fourth.
“It’s a fantastic evening,” said Mary Jean Buza-Sims, who helped organize Kekaha’s sixth annual Fourth of July Celebration on Saturday. “People say they like the ‘home-style’ feeling of our festival.”
The free event will feature games, food, live music, and vendors at Faye Park.
“It’s a grand celebration for Kekaha,” Buza-Sims said.
The highlight of the event will take place when Hawaii Explosives and Pyrotechnic Inc. will launch colorful explosions with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. The display will last between 10 and 15 minutes and feature a grand finale.
“They just put a fantastic display in the sky,” Buza-Sims said.
The tradition started in 2009 , when A E Ola Mau Na Leo O Kekaha and other organizations recreated the Fourth of July celebration, which had been lost after the closure of the Waimea sugar plantation. Buza-Sims said it breathed new life into Kekaha.
“A group of us came together and we wanted to revitalize our Kekaha community and bring things back that the people were familiar with,” Buza-Sims said.
The festivities begin at 4 and last until 9:30 p.m. People are welcome to bring chairs and mats.
