Puuwai Canoe Club will host the Buddy Peters Long Distance Race Saturday.
The event is named after Peters, a former member of the club’s board of directors who passed away years ago after battling cancer, said club president Brian Curll.
“We actually lost several of our board members to cancer. So that’s why we have cancer suvivior paddling group — Puuwai Pink,” Curll said Wednesday. “It affects peoples lives when they see someone go through it. We’re such a small community and we’re all touched.”
The long distance race will be split into two sections. Male paddlers will begin the race at 9 a.m. at Anahola Beach Park and make their way to Wailua Beach Park.
Twenty minutes after the men finish their section of the race, the women will take over and sprint their way to the finish line at the jetty at Kalapaki Beach.
Club vice president Rocco April added this year’s event will add a different twist.
“What’s interesting about the men’s finish is that when they reach the beach, one person has to jump out and run to the finish line,” April said.
