KOLOA — The North Shore is far away from Koloa, so the family had to get an early start, said Sarah Asuncion.
Her daughter Violet, a student at Kapaa High School, opened the Koloa Plantation Days Mixed Plate event Sunday afternoon in the cool, lush atmosphere of the Old Koloa Town Courtyard.
“This is a perfect place to bring music of all types,” Sarah said, while greeting people who settled under the shade of the big monkeypod tree boughs. “This is like a mixed plate where music from different backgrounds come together in one spot.”
Asuncion, performing regularly at Mixed Plate for the past five years, was joined by Eric Rivera Medeiros and Chas Pham and hosted by the merchants and tenants of Old Koloa Town.
Mixed Plate is a part of the 10-day Koloa Plantation Days that continues this morning with the Makawehi Sand Dune Hike, which departs the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, Seaview Terrace at 8 a.m.
The Koloa Plantation Days craft fair unfolds at the Grand Hyatt Kauai from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the day closing at the start of the free Polynesian revue and fire dancer at the Poipu Shopping Village from 7:30 a.m.
Wednesday activities include the free moderate hike along the Mahaulepu coast hosted by Malama Mahaulepu starting at 9:30 a.m. at the CJM Country Stables.
At 10 a.m., the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation opens its lawn to traditional Hawaiian games, including disc rolling, spear throwing, coconut tosses and foot races, all under an atmosphere of music and crafts.
The day ends with the plantation cooking themed demonstration by Mark Areola of Merriman’s at the Kauai Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukuiula from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
